“Filler” has become such a buzzword that it can mean anything from a touch of lip definition to a full structural facial transformation. In my Yorkville practice, I see my role as restoring balance and structure, not simply “adding volume.” To understand what filler can do for you, it helps to know that not all fillers are the same.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: The Versatile Workhorses
Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body naturally produces. HA fillers are gel-like products that vary in thickness, stretch, and lift. I choose specific HA fillers based on the area we’re treating (lips versus cheeks versus under-eyes), how much support versus softness we need, and whether we’re aiming for structure, subtle smoothing, or a pillowy effect.
Common uses for HA fillers include lips (definition, hydration, volume), cheeks and midface (lifting and contour), nasolabial folds and marionette lines, chin and jawline definition, and select tear trough cases. One of the benefits of HA fillers is that they can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed, which adds an additional layer of flexibility and safety.
Biostimulatory Fillers: Encouraging Your Own Collagen
Biostimulatory fillers work by stimulating your own collagen production over time. They’re not designed for classic “lip plumping,” but rather for global facial volume loss, subtle lifting and tightening, and improving skin texture and firmness over months.
These fillers are often used in the cheeks and temples, along the jawline, and for gradual, subtle rejuvenation in appropriate candidates. Results build slowly and can last longer than many HA fillers, but they’re also not easily reversible, so patient selection and dosing are key.
How I Decide Which Filler to Use
When you come in for a filler consultation, I start by studying your facial proportions and profile from multiple angles, where you’ve lost volume versus where you’ve always been naturally fuller, and how your face moves when you talk, smile, and laugh.
From there, I select products with properties that match the job: structural, lifting fillers for cheeks, chin, and jawline; soft, flexible fillers for lips and areas that move a lot; and collagen-stimulating fillers for global soft-tissue support. My goal is to create a result that looks good not just in a still photo, but in real life over months and years.
Safety and What to Expect
Filler is a medical procedure, not a simple beauty service. Safety is non-negotiable, which is why I always review your full medical history, use techniques that respect vascular anatomy, and discuss potential risks including bruising, swelling, and rare complications.
You’ll likely see some immediate improvement after filler, but final results can take 1–2 weeks to fully settle as swelling resolves. For biostimulatory fillers, improvements continue to build over months as your collagen responds.
If you’re curious about filler but unsure which type or how much you might need, we can sort that out together in person. You’re welcome to schedule a consultation with Dr. Chin or one of our aesthetic nurse injectors at Koru Wellness Aesthetics in Yorkville on the Upper East Side so we can analyze your facial structure, talk through your options, and design a filler plan that feels safe and true to you.
